Break Every Chain (2021) Movie Review

Break Every Chain Meaning

From a Christian perspective, when God breaks chains in a person’s life, he or she experiences deliverance from some type of addiction, stronghold, or illness.

A Christian Movie About Overcoming Depression

Have you ever struggled with depression and then tried to medicate in some way, which then only made the battle worse?  Overcoming depression requires faith. However, doubts about God can generate roadblocks to this transformation. This difficult process signifies the overall message of the “Break Every Chain” movie.

Common questions that come up throughout life as people go through a variety of circumstances involve doubts about God and His goodness. I mean, questions like, “Why did God let this happen?” Or… “How could a loving God not do anything about this situation?

The movie, “Break Every Chain” presents one police officer’s journey of faith. Early in the life of Jonathan Hickory ( Ignacyo Matynia), a series of circumstances led him to question his beliefs about God. He sank into depression. The death of his father affected him. As he was reflecting back on his childhood loss, Jonathan openly shared his struggle:

“That was the day I realized God didn’t care about me. God didn’t care about any of us. Even if he was real, why wouldn’t he listen to a child?”

At the midway point (about 40 minutes into the film), Jonathan who is much older and married finds out he and his wife are pregnant. At that milestone in his life, he fights the addiction and tries to change. Scenes of the father with the new baby follows. However, depression continues to cling to him and pull him back into his addictive habits.

The story includes tragedies and intense moments of grief. The idea of hope comes up as Jonathan tries to figure out life’s purpose.

A discussion between Jonathan and Pastor Gabe (Dean Cain) about forgiveness stood out to me at about 49:08 into the movie. In fact, the same type of crisis that a family went through in this film was portrayed in the movie– “Acts of Revenge,” which I wrote a review on recently. However, the response to the tragedy in “Break Every Chain” was much different–actually the opposite.

As the story continued, Jonathan continued to struggle. He told Pastor Gabe…

“If it’s one thing I know, its that we’re all gonna end up dead with no hope anyway. What’s the point in this life?”

He also asks again… where was Jesus in that DUI crash?

The pastor’s response rightfully contrasted the work of Satan with the will of God as one journeys through life in a fallen, broken world.

Summary:

Based on a true story, Jonathan Hickory, who joined the police force, questioned God after experiencing the death of his father. The event left him struggling with depression, alcoholism, and related issues. However, God worked and revealed Himself in his situation–leading to a powerful testimony.

Conclusion:

I recommend the movie for those who love inspirational, family-themed, and faith-based films. The testimony of Jonathan Hickory in this movie, which is based on a true story, is powerful. The movie is available on Tubi as well as on Amazon Prime.
