Although the film is helpful in understanding robotics technology and presents a clear overall picture of what is going on, the tone is pessimistic and worrisome. Of course, you will have positive as well as negative effects of AI. However, even with the negative picture in this film of what AI is becoming, I would have included some practical suggestions in regard to how one should prepare for such a future, as well as potential specific, positive uses of AI.
A Review Summary of “Robot Planet:”
Overall, I liked the film with all of the information and dramatic musical tune, but I would have liked to hear some more practical tips on how we can best prepare other than equip ourselves with knowledge. For example, rather than presenting mainly a negative picture and outlook, the questions should be, how can we–with the free will/choice that we have- use AI for good?
One example that comes to mind is the internet. Such technology can be used for good or evil purposes. In that way it’s neutral.
However, in my theological studies regarding Biblical prophecy, I find it interesting that what people would have found far-fetched a hundred years ago, when it comes to robotics technology, isn’t so hard to imagine now. I do believe AI will eventually be used for evil purposes on a widespread scale in the future.
Would I recommend this Film?
I would say yes, because the presentation is informative and provides a helpful background to this evolving type of technology. The outlook is negative, but one statement from the film that does resonate with me is as follows: “Will AI be a danger to mankind? It all depends on how we proceed…”Once again, keep in mind how you and others can use AI for beneficial purposes.
