Christians and Government: The Effects of a Deadly Virus in the World

The following movie review of “2025: The World Enslaved by a Virus” includes the question, how would people including Christians respond to a repressive regime in the wake of a deadly virus in the world? The movie paints a sinister picture of government due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The world portrayed in the film is one in which Christianity is not allowed and freedoms are taken away. However, a group of Christians fight back.

Positives:

“2025: The World Enslaved by a Virus” allows for reflection in the following areas:

  1. What might come across as a prophetic movie could provide insights and warnings concerning what conditions could be like in the relatively near future.
  2. How would Christians (and others who are of a different faith background or who are not religious at all) respond to these types of challenges?
  3. How might Jesus want His followers to make a difference in the midst of such a world?

Christians in this movie wanted to take a stand against what they feel is an unjust system. The goals the group pursued included:

• Finding like-minded people to join them

• Encouraging other Christians

• Making a difference and changing the world

As a side note, at about 13:00 into the movie, the soundtrack, “Remember Me” by Marloe is in my opinion among the best songs out there. Why I haven’t heard this particular song on popular music stations is beyond me:

I also like the rap version of Amazing Grace (54:00), though I probably wouldn’t want to sing the hymn in that way on Sunday mornings…

Actually, the entire collection of soundtracks in the movie is stellar. I tried looking up information on the amazing up-tempo song at the very end but was unable to find any.

Negatives:

What’s not clear is why vandalizing property in remote areas would be effective in accomplishing the above-mentioned goals. I don’t see those types of actions at several points early in the film as the best example of how Christians might or should “fight” the system. Honestly, I don’t think it made much sense.

I would have chosen a later year than 2025 and implied a different pandemic. The changes described in the film would unfold over time in a process, and so the movie could have pointed to a future year further down the road. What if another pandemic in the future similar to 2020 becomes a bigger catalyst for these types of changes?

Also, the producers of the movie could have made the story more interesting by including more frequent and comprehensive displays of the adversity the group endured as Christians during this regime. The majority of the film showed the fellowship and camaraderie of the group, which is excellent. However, I wanted to see more of the challenges presented to the Christian group thanks to the post covid regime.

Summary:

The movie is about Christians fighting back against a world system that takes away human freedoms–a government that wants to eliminate Christianity and the Bible. While the movie does offer the opportunity to reflect on what the future of this world could look like and how we might respond to those changes, some improvements might include taking a different approach to “fighting back” and from a Scriptural standpoint, emphasizing the willingness to endure persecution. In that way, Christians could present themselves as a testimony in the midst of the government-inflicted trials and tribulations.

Conclusion:
I recommend watching “2025: The World Enslaved by a Virus” as a reminder of the freedoms we have enjoyed and also as preparation for potential changes related to governmental systems in the future.
